Broughton Moor is the home of an old (but still owned by) M.O.D Royal Naval Arms Dump.

The compound ceased activities in '92 but has actually been left mostly to lay abandoned for nearly 50 years. A local farmer has had grazing rights all the way from its creation to the present day. Since the area was mainly left to the farmer, many wild species have thrived in the area.

The M.O.D. cannot confirm that all explosives have been removed, but by first looks, the place is pretty empty with no visual explosives left (they maybe underground?).

Reports from the nearby village said that black helicopters randomly flew in and out of the compound during the day and night and after a bit of discussion between the villagers and the M.O.D. they (the M.O.D.) said that the ground was occasionally used as a training area for the S.A.S.

It is planned that the local council will be handed the land in the next few months by the M.O.D. for regenoration into a leisure or educational park, this can only go ahead after a multi-million pound asbestos and explosive clean up.

The compound covers an area roughly in a 3 mile diameter and many of the buildings are exactly the same, but I have found a few hidden gems. The site is surrounded by a large parimeter fence that is patrolled each night by 5 men (according to the farmer) who inspect the fence to seal up open areas, I do not know if these men are from his farm or members of the M.O.D. I have included an arial map of where I went while I was there, the large dot at the bottom of the page is where the farmer found me and politely asked me to leave, better him say that than the S.A.S!!

Anyway, enough of the background, onto the pics...
